Eidos vor Übernahme?

Nachdem Eidos das letzte Mal vor mehr als einem Jahr als Übernahmeobjekt diverser Publisher in die Gerüchteküche geriet, steht die britische Firma wieder einmal im Mittelpunkt von Übernahmespekulationen. Angeheizt werden diese Vermutungen durch einen bislang unbekannten Investor, der nach Angaben des britischen Magazins Telegraph mittlerweile zwölf Millionen Anteile an Eidos angesammelt hat. Bereits im Dezember hat die Investment-Firma Schroders 19 Prozent des Tomb Raider-Entwicklers übernommen.

Angesichts der eher schlechten Spiele in dieser Generation, wenn man Hitman 2, TimeSplitters 2 und ein paar Andere außen vor lässt, nicht gerade verwunderlich.

Besser waren sie früher wirklich nicht zwangsläufig, doch Eidos entwickelte epxlizit in dieser Generation viele Spiele, die sich als Verkaufs-Flops erwiesen.

It seems that EIDOS aren't doing too well, with profits taking a big nose dive and the future looking bleak.

It seems that EIDOS may be up for sale after loosing a lot of money on recent titles such as Hitman: Contracts and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness.

While no companies have confirmed a bid it is expected that the usual big companies such as Sony, Microsoft and Electronic Arts are expected to bid.

EIDOS stated that the video games company is partially to blame. They stated that there is too much of an emphasis on profit and the "continuing need to invest more heavily in research and development ahead of the next hardware cycle.

EA IN FRAME AS EIDOS BUYOUT RUMOURS GATHER PACE
EA to buyout Eidos' announcement imminent, say industry sources, as the Brit publisher confirms it is in "preliminary discussions with a small number of parties"

The speculation surrounding the future of British publisher Eidos took a new twist today, when industry insiders suggested that EA is poised to swoop for the company.

Sources stated that an announcement about the buyout is due in the next few days, while Eidos itself has admitted to talks with unnamed parties regarding "possible business combinations".

A statement issued to the London Stock Exchange by the Brit publisher read: "In response to recent press speculation and following the announcement of a strategic review on 17 June 2004 the Board of Eidos confirms that...it is in preliminary discussions with a small number of parties in relation to possible business combinations."

It then went on to add that these discussions would in no way guarantee an offer being made for the company and that any further announcement is unlikely "ahead of the company's full year results".

Eidos buyout rumours have been spreading like wildfire since around E3 time, with key publishers EA, Activision and Ubisoft all being linked to the company. And it's EA who our industry sources have said is about to reveal it's purchasing the Hitman/Deus Ex publisher - a rumour that has neither been denied or confirmed by either party.

When we contacted EA earlier today, a senior spokesperson told us: "We are aware of the speculation but do not wish to make a comment at this stage". Similarly, an Eidos spokesperson said that they did not wish to "add anything to what has already been said in the press release".

It's all good news for Eidos shareholders though, as share prices rose from 90p last Thursday to 1.08 at the time of writing - an inevitable result of the continued speculation. Keep posted for any further developments.

News: Ubisoft Buying Eidos For £215 Million

Ubisoft have but a bid in on Eidos to take over the game developers, to show they mean business they are willing to spend £215 million.

Eidos' managers have spent the last week sorting out details of a Ubisoft takeover for an estimated £215 million.

According to reports Eidos have hit financial difficulties due to the underperformance of several key games, including Hitman: Contracts. Expect an official word soon.
