NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO - News), announced today that it will be the North American and international publisher for Cryptic Studios’™ highly anticipated massively multiplayer online (MMO) action game, Champions Online™, being developed for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft* and Games for Windows®. Champions Online is scheduled for release in spring of 2009.

“2K Games is excited to work with such a talented group as Cryptic Studios,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Given their stellar pedigree and amazing grasp of the MMO genre, we are confident that Champions Online will deliver an innovative and exciting action MMO experience to gamers.”

Cryptic Studios, based in Los Gatos, CA and established in July 2000, is one of the leading independent developers of massively multiplayer online games for Windows PC and current generation systems. As an independent, employee-owned company, Cryptic is committed to delivering high quality, innovative cross platform MMO gameplay. Cryptic is best known as the creator of the award-winning City of Heroes® and City of Villains™ MMO titles. Based on the popular Champions™ pen-and-paper RPG, Champions Online will give players the power of total customization for their hero experience while they explore a vast comic book universe.

“2K Games is a terrific publishing partner for Champions Online,” said John Needham, CEO of Cryptic Studios. “Cryptic is proud that Champions Online will be 2K’s first MMO title and we look forward to working together towards a tremendous launch next year.”

1UP: Champions Online First-Look Preview

I spent the summer before my freshman year of college -- the three or four months immediately after City of Heroes was released -- playing the superhero-based massively multiplayer role-playing game non-stop. No job and the feeling of release that comes with high school graduation will allow for such things, but shortly after I started college classes, I drifted away from the game, and even the City of Villains expansion was not enough to draw me back in. Next year Cryptic will get their second shot at taking over my life when they release Champions Online, and I got my first taste of the possible new addiction at a demonstration a few weeks ago.
One of the core focuses listed on a powerpoint before the gameplay demonstration was "console development." Cryptic and newly-announced publisher 2K are pushing Champions Online as an Xbox 360 game first and a PC game second. In fact, they're calling it the first MMO designed for consoles from the ground up. Final Fantasy XI may disagree, but seeing the numerous bars and buttons of the traditional MMO interface collapsed down in a way that works effectively with a controller is still impressive.

Essentially the controller setup breaks down as such: Three face buttons on the Xbox 360 controller are devoted to powers of your choice with one saved for jumping. Holding the left trigger brings up four more power slots. The right button locks onto enemies, and generally everything appears easy to choose from and control. The team plans to include a balanced keyboard setup as well for PC players who are unwilling to switch over to a controller, but Cryptic says they're still working on how the controls will translate.

Although labeling Champions Online as a stand-in for "City of Heroes 2" isn't necessarily far off from the truth, Cryptic is at least up-front about how lessons learned from COH are shaping their new game. The streamlined controls, for example, have upgraded the already action-packed fighting system of their original superhero MMO with a faster pace and a tighter focus. Hitboxes for your powers are now more realistic-looking and not based merely on targeting and distance from the enemy. And perhaps more importantly, as Cryptic CCO Jack Emmert emphasizes, Champions Online's world is "not just a city."

Champions Online will not only feature more actual space than City of Heroes, but it will have a wider variety of locales that better represents the gamut of adventures available in your average superhero comic. Emmert served as tour guide for one of those locations in a demonstration of Monster Island, a tropical/volcanic setting overrun with dinosaurs, aliens, and human-beast hybrids created by an in-game Dr. Moreau.

As Emmert engaged cel-shaded dinos in combat, he showed off the power system. Players use basic, weaker abilities to build up power, which you then spend on stronger and more impressive feats. Action remains the sole concern, though, as power builds quickly, leaving your options fairly open for which abilities you want to use to wipe out the bad guys. Emmert's on-screen avatar fought alone as I was informed that around 90% of Champions Online's content will be soloable, with more than enough to get non-social gamers to the level 50 cap.

While Emmert's demo also went into more specifics on the combat system and showcased new indoor instanced areas, those subjects are better-suited to discuss from the hands-on demo that we also were lucky enough to try out. We can't share our impressions of that just yet, but check back soon.
