PS4/XOne/PC Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma

Versus Evil has released the first official trailer for Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma, in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC at Redacted Studios and due out this summer.

The game starts where the original Afro Samurai story left off, and follows the path of Kuma on his quest for revenge as he hunts down Afro to make him pay for killing all those he loved.

If you’re at E3 next week, Volume 1 of the game will be on exhibit.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1 launches for PS4, PC on September 22

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1 will launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on September 22, publisher Versus Evil announced.

The game will also be available for Xbox One “shortly thereafter [the PS4 and PC release] at a date to be announced.” The PlayStation 4 version will also receive a special discounted Trilogy bundle containing all three volumes of the game for 20 percent off the regular price (30 percent off for PlayStation Plus members). Volume 2 and Volume 3 will launch at a later date. Each will have its own story arch, characters, combat styles to master, and original soundtrack.

A sequel to the 2009 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, Afro Samurai 2 is a third-person actin game and picks up where the first game left off. The story follows the path of Kuma, a cybernetically enhanced killing machine with a bear’s head who was once Afro Samurai’s closest childhood friend called Jino. After Kuma is defeated by Afro, he regains consciousness, but must regain his strength, humanity, and sanity in order to go after Afro and avenge the deaths of those he loved, including his adopted little sister Otsuru, who was murdered at the Sword School massacre.

Verkaufsstopp & Rückerstattungen: Entwickler sprechen von »Versagen«

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One sollte eigentlich über mehrere Episoden hinweg die Geschichte von Kuma, einem Kindheitsfreund des Manga-Helden Afro Samurai, erzählen. Doch daraus wird nun nichts mehr: Der verantwortliche Publisher Versus Evil hat den bereits veröffentlichte ersten Teil aus dem Verkauf genommen, bietet allen Kunden eine Rückerstattung des Kaufpreises an und wird die Entwicklung der weiteren Episoden mit sofortiger Wirkung einstellen.

In einem Interview mit dem CGMagazine spricht das Unternehmen von einem »Versagen« auf ganzer Linie. Man habe Volume 2 und Volume 3 einfach nicht mehr mit gutem Gewissen fertigstellen können, heißt es. Deshalb habe man in einem langen Prozess nach einem Weg gesucht, den Käufern ihr Geld zurückzuzahlen und das Projekt einzustellen, so der Firmenchef Steve Escalante. »That escalated quickly«, möchte man da fast einwerfen - und noch ein »no pun intended« hinterherschieben.

Als Grund für den Fehlschlag gibt Escalante an, dass die Leute das Spiel einfach nicht gemocht hätten. Der Projektstopp habe nichts mit technischen Problemen oder Fehlern zu tun.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One ist mittlerweile weder bei Steam noch im PlayStation Store oder auf dem Xbox-Marktplatz erhältlich.
