The game is unbelievably fun so far. I'm absolutely in love with it. This is what next-gen is about. INCREDIBLE SOUND/MUSIC, it's just so sick in 7.1pcm. The controls of course are very responsive, and the platforming, while basic, is very fun and has been a 50/50mix so far for me. I'm enjoying looking around for the treasures as it gives me an excuse to look at the visuals...
...And my. This is the BEST LOOKING game to date. Period. It's not based around one strong point, everything in the game is a strong point. From lighting/shadowing (you'll see with the flashlight when you shine it on stuff it casts shadows, and the lightsources from fires reflecting correctly on the ground/walls/you). And the TEXTURES are the best I've seen on a console game, and like it or not pc guys, but it will give even Crysis a run for it's money at times. And the animation is godly. It really adds to the experience. There's little touches like dust/dirt falling from crumbling stone/ground that's really believable. When swinging on the vines leaves start falling off. While standing around, leaves will just blow by you.
Over all gameplay is fantastic. Responsive with a variety of moves in platforming and in combat. And speaking of combat, the AI is awesome that it tries to flush you out and flank you. Shoot outs get incredibly intense in this, and exciting when you get a chance to smash someone against a pillar or kick them square in the nuts, just to hear Nate trash talking.
Which brings me back to the audio. MOST FANTASTIC SOUNDING GAME EVER. Sfx, voices, music... It's all on a level that movies strive to reach. Hearing Nate and friend's chatter along is so believable. Hearing the enemy call out for their friends and talk shit is awesome. And Nate talking to himself during combat, picking up items, or just out of the clear blue so sets the mood.
And what's this? An interesting story that actually makes you want to go on through the game? Well I'll be damned.
Easily the best example of why reviewers need a flashlight to see their heads way out of their ass. Seriously, the "cool to downplay PS3 and it's games" stuff is getting old, and just makes you look like an asshat. This game is truly a movie experience that you feel connected with. More as I go through the game some more, and I'm starving.
This game looks incredible
Naughty Dog art design +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm sitting here watching this scenery viewpoint with birds flying around, the sun blazing red, nate sitting around moving his head, waterfall streaming down and it looks like a painting. One of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen in a game in my life.
Just yesterday I thought AC was the best looking next-gen game, now I'm not so sure.
Also the game has a good amount of exploration/platforming early on. Not sure why they made an all action demo since they should've known it might turn off those wanting exploration/puzzles/platforming, which are in the game.
I love the optional treasures and the tons of unlockables.
So, my review at Gamer.nl got temporarily offline because the 'boss' thought it was not right to give a 10/10. Then other editors who didn't play the game criticized this rating and thought they could base their own opinion on a demo and... on other reviewers opinions!
Then my editor-in-chief and final editor (how do you call it...?) agreed with me and put the review back online.
Then I got fucking angry because of this fucking bullshit.
This game is fucking fantastic.
I'm on the edge of my seat.
The characters seem great, the voice overs are fantastic, so much personality in these characters.. it is very refreshing..
I don't think I even need to mention the graphics... just.. wow.
I may end up playing straight through tonight lol.
edit:
and the coolest part.. the non-player characters actually KILL some enemies for you! What a concept... non brain-dead AI companions! Naughty Dog am Gods confirmed.
I'm 65% into the game and am absolutely LOVING IT!
The game looks unfuckingbelievable. Keep in mind that I've seen and PLAYED both Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect on the 360 this week and in the graphics & gameplay department Uncharted is by far the most impressive one. The game is a freaking blast to play and does not get dull. The custscenes are freaking amazing as well; all using ingame engine.
The only draw back is that I think I'm in love with Elena now :/
Is that really a bad thing?
In the beginning of a few levels you see occasional texture loading, but thats to be expected because it's loading them on the fly. EVERYTHING is seemless in the game and it's like you're playing the game from start to finish w/out interuption(exclude ingame cutscenes). All in all, very very impressed. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.
Holy shit that lighting and shadowing engine is fucking advanced, they've got self-shadowing and dynamic shadowing going on nearly everything and spotlights acts as a dynamic light source just like the sun overhead, reflection in the water is superb, good damn it barrelama!!! Best console graphics by far, it's not even a contest right now, I was playing COD4 last night and playing Uncharted right now, the visuals puts COD4 to fucking shame. AND I like the gunplay in Uncharted better.
Just got to Chapter 6, I'm loving this game more and more. The vistas created by some of the camera perspectives are just simply stunning.
Those of you thinking that there won't be enough platforming, you won't be disappointed. Without giving percentages, I'd definitely say there's more platforming than shooting. It's a good balance so far, though sometimes you have no idea when you'll run into a group of enemies or not. Platforming is fun to do, every once in awhile I have trouble seeing that ledge or cliff sticking out on where to go next, basically just do leaps of faith and they end up working
Oh man es wäre eine schande, wenn dieses Spiel durch die ganzen dummen Reviews untergehen würde.yeah and again that's 8 and a half hours of non stop playing between two people. and i think it's a good length for a game with extended replay value due to all the hidden stuff and achievements etc. technically i don't own it (a friend bought it and i bought galaxy, so we'll swap later) and he just took it home.
i was impressed with the environments (good variety) and i didn't think the platforming was too easy or anything. it reminded me a lot of the AC videos i've seen, except i'm actually pressing buttons to jump on all the stuff.
the puzzles weren't super hard or anything, but they were entertaining and it did involve problem solving. the journal gives you hints similar to folklore. i wouldn't say the puzzles were groundbreaking or anything, but they're not lesser puzzles than you'd find in other games.
similarly, elena's AI is comparable to other games' "partner" AI. she reminded me a lot of alyx in half-life 2. so again not groundbreaking, but not worth criticizing the game over when other games are no better in this area.
the visuals are amazing. partly because they just look so good asthetically, but what kept impressing me throughout the game is that no two walls/floors look alike.
there's also good variety with the weapons. you'll be picking up different pistols and rifles throughout the game -- there's even another shotgun.
i've never been one to overanalyze the enemy AI in games, but combined with the wide variety of animations they have, the enemies in uncharted were noticeably better than other games. they'll slide into cover, they'll roll into cover, they'll dive into cover. they'll poke out on top, the side, and sometimes they even lay on the ground poking out of cover to shoot at you. they make an obvious attempt to flank you but they won't always come after you if you try to turtle. they'll limp and hold their gut when shot in the respective areas.
later in the game you fight more armored humans and they have helmets -- shooting them in the head pops their helmet off. some people may not like how many bullets it takes to kill the later enemies, but it wasn't a huge deal -- shotguns are still lethal in close range. paranormal stuff ahead: you do fight non-humans. nothing too outrageous. reminded me of farcry a bit, but i think uncharted handled it well. the ending was cool and it does leave it open for an interesting sequel. the last fight was quite hard.
i didn't get a chance to check how many medal points or treasures i had accumulated at the end of the playthrough, but i believe i have less than half of the 1000 medal points you use to unlock stuff and probably about half of the total treasures. i could very well get a chance to play again this weekend but he's going to let me borrow it over thanksgiving too. i'm excited to play it with dualshock 3 and i'm getting a new TV on black friday.
i'd give it a 9.5 or so -- everyone should get a chance to play it and it really does successfully combine great elements of games like RE4, gears, and prince of persia into one solid package that other games will likely be inspired by. i can't think of a game i'd give a 10 so don't bother asking "why only 9.5" or whatever . based on the standards of reviewers on 360 games, it'd easily get a handful of 10's. the flaws are few and minor and i think it has good replay value with all the achievements, treasures, and unlockables that can effect gameplay and asthetics. as far as singleplayer action third person shooters go, it's at the top of the list.
