To add more context, that there was a Vagrant Story sequel already written isn't surprising in itself. Hironobu Sakaguchi once called him one of the most perfectionist man he ever met, and he' s known for writing down an entire fictional universe that could span several games. Vagrant Story was the reason Sakaguchi promoted Matsuno to become director and producer of Final Fantasy XII, as he had said in a Famitsu interview that playing Vagrant Story put him to tears at how incredible the game was.

What is interesting is that it is the first time we got any new information about what the sequel could have been. People who played the game might have an idea of what he was getting at, considering the original Vagrant Story was a Rashomon-style story in which the truth is different depending on who you ask and you are never sure of exactly what happened. Being able to enter the mind of Ashley Riot inception-style and break through his trauma to find the truth within would have been an incredible concept in a medieval fantasy story.

_________

Unrelated but I'll make use of it to throw some more fun facts. A lot of the staff who worked on Vagrant Story is working on FFXIV. Kazutoyo Maehiro was a planner for Vagrant Story and he was the main scenario writer for ARR and Heavensward, and became the scenario supervisor ever since. Hiroshi Minagawa was part of the task force that identified the issues of 1.0 and decided on a plan of action alongside Yoshida to fix the game. He is responsible for the UI of the game and he came up with the controller-friendly cross-hotbar, despite dealing with the messy legacy of 1.0's interface system. He was promoted as art director for Stormblood and Shadowbringers. Incidentally, he was also responsible of the art direction and UI of Vagrant Story. Obviously, Akihiko Yoshida, character designer of every Matsuno game was also involved in FFXIV, especially during 1.0 as art director.

Naoki Yoshida also said that the reason he joined Square-Enix was to work with Matsuno, but he left just before he joined the company. He claims he consider Matsuno as a "God designer" in his book, and that Tactics Ogre (another Matsuno game) was his favorite game ever. In fact, Banri Oda (scenario writer and lore supervisor) said that Tactics Ogre was the inspiration for the story being so politically-charged in the game since the reboot. Probably why there are also so many Tactics Ogre sets in the game.

If you ever felt like the game skews closer to Ivalice since the reboot, here is your reason why. Matsuno's legacy has had a huge impact on many aspects of this MMO in the art and story department. So to see him infuse ideas that he had for more Ivalice games into FFXIV shows that he has a lot of respect for the work and craft of Naoki Yoshida. Here's hoping Matsuno is involved in Yoshida's next-gen project (FFXVI?).

@Avi

:pcat: :nyanwins:

Hab wohl leider keine Einstellungen hochgeladen.

:pcat: :nyanwins:

Man kann einstellen welche Menüs jobübergreifend erhalten bleiben sollen.
