just spent the past hour or so playing Motorstorm Online with some PR folks and other media.
Not only is online play a total blast, but this latest build seems to have a few more graphics tweaks, so the game looks even better. Maybe I'm crazy but in past builds I don't remember things like an overcast sky or the sun setting as I was running a dusk race.
The good news is that the online build plays with all of the graphic bells and whistles and no apparent slow-downs in game. Of course I was only playing with seven others and the servers were absolutely empty except for us, so I suppose there could be issues when it launches, but I sorta doubt it.
The one nitpick I had with the game was that the lobby seemed very sparse, just really a list of names, the players' rank and whether they won, finished or didn't finish the last race. You could click on a person and bring up their stats, but it still seemed barren.
This may not seem like a huge deal, but it can be annoying at times. When the game sets to launch your told the name of the track and then you go in and choose your vehicle. Unfortunately, if you don't know the track you have to sorta guess what sort of vehicle to choose. It would have been nice if they had some sort of detail about the track in the lobby. I'd also love to know what everyone else picked before the race started.
But really these are minor things and the game itself is amazing online. The races were silky smooth, the graphics over the top and the gameplay as frantic as ever, though this time around you knew everyone you slammed into a rock or off a cliff was a real person.
The game also supports in-game voice chat with a microphone. A couple of people were using it and it seemed a bit choppy but still understandable.
While I'm still disappointed that the game doesn't have split-screen multiplayer, the online version really pushes this game over the top. I suspect this could be one of the PS3's first post-launch smash hits. Brian Crecente
