Xbox 360: Troubled Times in 2009
3 Reasons Why Xbox will lose 2009 12/07/2008
7 Comments
Before I start this list, i just want to say that i am a dedicated Xbox 360 gamer. In fact, it's the only console i own right now. But just observing where Microsoft is trying to take the 360 has me worried that old faithful might have a rough year ahead of it.
3. Halo Can Only Go So Far.
Everyone knows that without the Halo franchise there would be no Xbox. But lately it seems like the Chief is losing his touch. Yes, Halo 3 is a great game, there are still hundreds of thousands of people still playing it everyday. But the franchise is starting to suffer from what i like to call "Mario Syndrome." If there's a genre we're gonna try and put Halo in it. There's Halo Wars coming in February, and Halo: ODST following that sometime in November, not to mention the Peter Jackson project and the rumored Gearbox sequel. How much Chief is to much? I guess we shall soon find out.
2. Trying To Go "Casual" Isn't A Good Idea.
Xbox is home to the hardcore gamer. Halo, Call of Duty, and Fable are games that define the experience that Microsoft wants to deliver. But with 2008 being the year of the "Casual Gamer," Microsoft has begun rethinking what they want to offer in the future. This trend has recently manifested itself in products like Avatars, Lips, and some may argue, the NXE. The idea of dumbing everything down so grandma can use it is ridiculous. A console founded on Halo and Xbox Live shouldnt concern itself with the casual market. Making this an even worse idea is the fact that Nintendo has a strangle hold on the casual market, making entry almost impossible.
1. Sony Has A Killer Lineup.
I know, 2008 was supposed to be the year of the PS3, every gaming publication said so. So what happened? Price is still holding the console back. If Sony can find the sweet spot in regards to price, the PS3 will find its stride. With heavy hitters like Killzone 2, Infamous, Uncharted 2, and maybe even God of War 3, Sony has a stellar year planned out. On top of that, it's totally up in the air as to what Microsoft has up its sleeve. All of there big first party franchises have already been released. So what do we have to look forward to? Project Gotham 5, Kameo 2; no thank you Microsoft I'll pass.
